An elementary school in Cupertino, California is asking students to rank themselves, literally by “power and privilege.”
The rankings include white, Christian, middle-class, cisgender, and more. Students were asked to “deconstruct” their identities in regards to race, family income, and yes, even sexuality.
Several families brought issues with this project to the school’s principal. Parents felt that their children were being taught racism and made to feel separated instead of unified by empowerment through education.
One parent said, “We were shocked. They were basically teaching racism to my eight-year-old.” Another stated, “We think some of our school board members are [critical race theory] activists and they must go.”
The elementary school is majority Asian-American, and it was an Asian-American parent that appropriately brought their concerns to school officials.
Disparities amongst income class and systemic racism have been hard-hitting issues in socio-political discussion recently. And it goes beyond just a left versus right issue. There are citizens from all walks of life within each party. And while these issues may hold importance, is it really appropriate for third graders to be focusing on this? Are children ready to be examining and critiquing their sexual identity at this point in life? Most would agree that the answer here is no.
So how could this affect children? It is especially concerning to many that these children have been asked to rank themselves, instead of just being educated on philosophical arguments surrounding “power and privilege.”
Our founding fathers escaped a tyrannical king who took advantage of his privilege and power against his own citizens. There are enriching ways to teach children about these concepts, incorporating important history and provoking thoughtful discussion.
This is truly disgusting and it really is a large part of what’s wrong with the left. This critical race theory propaganda can’t continue if we’re ever going to have a healthy society again.
